You are the silence in between what I thought and what I said…

Well as you probably know (or maybe you don’t, I can’t remember if I’ve previously blogged about this) I finished university for the year quite some time ago. I promised that I’d post something the first chance I had but then things happened and I really just got super lazy so I’ve failed to come up with a legitimate excuse. Instead of posting an enormous, essay-like text post as I’ve been known to do, I’m going format this in much less painful bullet points.

Things that have been good:

  • Receiving an HD (minus) on my final written assignment of the year - the essay I wrote for fashion on political power through dress comparing Marie Antoinette and Jackie Kennedy
  • Being successful in my attempt to become a QUT Connect volunteer for next year
  • Having endless amounts of free time and being able to sleep in
  • Being (for the most part) able to stay up-to-date with TV shows (Gossip Girl and Glee - I’m no longer a month behind everyone else, yay!)
  • Having the opportunity to start ~new TV shows like Pan Am (technically I started watching this when it premiered in September), Mad Men and the O.C. (other than that time I watched the series finale, I’ve never actually watched an episode of the O.C.)
  • Downloading Edith Piaf’s 100 Greatest Hits
  • Endless night of nothing but the utter perfection of Soul Punk and Ceremonials
  • Shopping at antique stores with my family on the weekends
  • Reading books for fun rather than research (although I did end up reading that Marie Antoinette book for fun like the history nerd I truly am)
  • Christmas music

Things that have been not so good:

  • The heat/poor weather in general
  • Not being able to find a job/having no one willing to hire me and therefore having no money to spare
  • Having neighbours who like to party/drink/play (and sing to) terrible pop music
  • Feeling unsure/anxious about the future
  • The whole ‘Academic Dishonesty’ thing that went down this month (I promise to elaborate on this at a later time)
  • My grandparents visiting this weekend (I don’t need a time machine to know that this already spells disaster)

Starting tomorrow, I will also be volunteering for the week as an assistant stylist/backstage dresser at the QUT fashion graduate show which means late nights and late morning sleep-ins. Before last Friday I’d pretty much given up hope of being selected since I’d assumed the selection process had been finalised at the beginning of the month but it appears I was wrong. I haven’t decided yet whether it’s going to be awesome or a complete disaster (I’m hoping, for the future of any career I might pursue, that this isn’t the case) so to be safe, I didn’t place it under either category. I do promise to keep you all updated as best I can during the week however.

Thank you to any of you who took the time to read my ridiculous ramblings, you’re absolute darlings.

Août

I had every intention of posting this on the final days of August (and again over two weeks ago) but, as usual, my ‘schedule’ did not permit this. Can you believe it’s been exactly a month since I’ve posted anything?
Nevertheless, here is my recap of the month of August.

University was relatively busy. There was one particular week that I recall bursting into tears from anxiety and stress though ultimately I survived. The Creative Industries core unit Making Connections is rather loathsome. Firstly, it’s based entirely on the concept of my arch nemesis Team Work. Our marks rely on the effort and completion of work by each group member so if someone fails to do their (basic weekly) work, everyone loses marks. While the girls I’m teamed up with are lovely, it’s a nightmare. We started the unit with the most horribly tedious and downright boring individual assessment on a CI project where we had to detail its purpose, context, each and every stakeholder and their engagement tools and strategies. It took hours to complete and I had absolutely no interest in any of the projects (I have two disciplines and somehow neither were catered for).

Performance Innovation is alright. I’m not so big on the whole “we must renounce our past forms of theatre and performance because they hold no relevance in today’s society” thing because I love theatre in its traditional form. Some of it is also a little too obscure (read: weird) for my tastes although, in saying that, a lot of it is unbelievably brilliant. I wrote an essay on appropriation and intertextuality (top marks to anyone who actually knows what those terms mean) and managed to make a total of ten references to other works, including: Romeo and Juliet, The Glass Menagerie, Gone With the Wind, A Very Potter Musical, Harry Potter, 10 Things I Hate About You, Prospero’s Books, She’s The Man, and Hamletmaschine. Admittedly I do have a very understanding tutor who doesn’t mind that I’ve managed to turn up half an hour late twice because I can’t manage to make it to the bus stop early. Oh, I also have friends (FRIENDS, guys) because two of the girls I was teamed up with last semester for a performance of Top Girls are in my tutorial and they’re super lovely and we still keep in contact.

Unspeakable Beauty: a History of Fashion and Style is definitely my favourite unit this semester. We’re covering fashion history from the ancient Greeks to the 1930s age of Hollywood Glamour. As I’m sure all of you already know, I adore history and if it were more sensible, I’d make a career out of it (although I may just do so anyway - expect a blog post about this). Our first assessment was a group presentation on a style of dress from a particular period of fashion covered in that week’s lecture. While I would have killed to cover Hollywood Glamour or Marie Antoinette, in the end I chose Fashion in the Age of Jane Austen which meant covering Empire dress. While I was finding books for research (six in total), I discovered that there is a legitimate book called Fashion in the Time of Jane Austen published last year which ended up being hugely helpful. All this research ultimately lead to a unshakeable compulsion to finally read Jane Austen (that’s right, I have somehow avoided - despite my extension English background - ever having to read a Jane Austen novel) which I’ll hopefully get around to before the year’s end.

I’m not actually sure why I chose to take Photomedia and Artistic Practice (a fancy name for introduction to photography) over the film unit. Truth be told, I find film infinitely more interesting than photography. I’ve never had any interest in studying photography, let alone becoming a photographer, and the class definitely has its obligatory hipsters and (surprise surprise) I have not managed to make a single friend or acquaintance. The lectures start at 8 AM so I have not bothered to attend a single one and I have very little faith in the idea of me attending in the final weeks. The projects aren’t so bad and my tutor (who is apparently a professional photographer) seemed quite impressed with my work so I’m hoping that means I’ll pass the unit.

Now that I’ve covered the University side, I’m not sure I can remember anything memorable from this month. It was my mother’s birthday on the 10th although we didn’t do anything major. We did visit Mt Coot-Tha towards the end of the month where we went on an impromptu bush walk that lead to Slaughter Falls which was conveniently dried up and I managed to destroy my favourite pair of flats. The lookout at the restaurant and cafe was lovely though and you could see the entire city.

Since my sister was working that day, we returned the next weekend to visit the Mt Coot-Tha botanical gardens (we were planning on going to the Planetarium as well but it was closed) which was rather lovely. The fern house, bonsai house and Japanese garden were definitely my favourites. We also (for lack of a better term) renovated both our backyard and front yard gardens to look a little more like English garden and we now have the nicest garden in our street (I don’t care how conceited that sounds, everyone else has palm trees and one or two tropical plants). I’ve been growing dwarf snapdragons in a pot as well as purple violas in the garden and both have been flowering brilliantly (I may even take pictures).

I suppose that’s all I have to recount since September is almost over and I’ll need to make another long post in a few day’s (or possibly week’s) time. Until then, I love all of you(r faces).

linernotekids:

The new LNK website, webstore and collection have officially launched!
A little over 2 years ago, Liner Note Kids began as a shirt I made to wear to a concert.
And look where we are now. LNK shirts are being worn with pride by liner note kids all over the world. Somehow this hope and dream has turned into a proper brand, and it’s all thanks to you.
LNK 2.0 is the first proper screenprint collection and I’m so proud of it. The shirts somehow manage to celebrate my love for all things retro, music and typography all at once and I can’t get enough of them. I hope you feel the same! you can check out all the new designs in the webstore here.
Please keep in mind that the webstore is in USD and as such, prices will change as the NZD-USD exchange rate does. I realise that the USD is in a pretty bad state at the moment, but don’t worry cos LNK is having a RELAUNCH SALE! For the next 2 weeks you can get 10% off everything when you use the discount code LNKRELAUNCH :) My gift to you for supporting me and sticking by me all these years.
Please also keep in mind that the last time i coded a website from scratch was 2008… so if you find anything wrong with it, please let me know so I can try get it sorted :)
That said, I’m keen to know what you think of the site, the webstore, the new collection, everything!?

I am so damn proud of Charli and how far she has managed to come these past few years. She is an amazingly talented artist, designer, photographer and an all-round wonderful person (plus a million other things that I haven’t yet described) and she deserves this more than anyone I know. I still remember the first time I bought an LNK shirt (or rather shirts) and how unbelievably excited and proud I was to wear it whenever I could (seriously, every free dress day at school was LNK day for me).
You can also consider this as me urging each and every one of you to check out her new collection because, even though I’m probably biased, it’s incredible, unique and suits every single possible style or trend you could imagine.

August 6, 2011 10:14 pm March 4, 2011 7:30 pm

I’m always in this twilight, in the shadow of your heart…

I haven’t actually written anything about the going-ons in my life in quite a while so I figured it would be be appropriate to do so now.

Exactly two weeks ago today, I got my braces off. Ever since, I’ve been meaning to write a tl;dr blog post but until now, it hasn’t happened. Anyway, life without braces is all kinds of amazing, especially with eating. The retainer I have to wear for 12 hours makes me want to hurl when I take it out every morning (but I’m sure that’s a little tmi) and looks like a slimmer, more fitted mouthguard. Eventually I’ll scan my before/after pictures so everyone can see them and maybe take a photo of my plaster before teeth.

Last week I had Orientation which was both a disaster and mostly a waste of time. I was on the wrong platform at the train station and literally had to sprint back up the ramp, across and down another ramp to make it to the next platform over where I boarded the train about 5 seconds before they closed the door. I spent time in lecture halls and whatnot, listening to lecturers spurt out information that I’d already read online about the course. I took a tour with a guide who didn’t actually take us to more than three buildings and just pointed in the general direction of some of the others. I went to see the Shape Of Things To Come exhibit (which is work from art and design graduates) which was probably the highlight of my orientation experience. I only went for two days and ended up skipping out early on both days. Sometimes I’m really lazy like that.

Then I had my first week of University. It was good though travelling is a little exhausting. Although the Kelvin Grove campus couldn’t be more confusing if they tried, I managed to find all of my classes without having to ask for help (I did however, walk around searching for buildings in my spare time very awkwardly). 20th Century Performance seems like it’ll be really interesting, especially since we’re studying The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams and Galileo by Bertolt Brecht. Despite having a two-hour lecture, we were let out an hour early. This would have been fine but it gave me a three hour gap between lectures. I just ate and read for the most part, until a Japanese girl came up to me to ask about lectures. She was really lovely and told me her mother designed/made Jennifer Hawkin’s golden dress for Miss Universe which is kinda awesome.

Creative Industries: People and Practice is alright. The lectures are all kinds of confusing as to what we actually study in the unit but since the tutes are more major-based, I get to focus more on fashion. A Gothic girl also said hello to me because she saw me reading. I smiled back. Strategic Speech Communication is by far the worst class (though my opinion on it may have to do with the fact that it forces me to travel roughly four hours all up for a measly one-hour lecture). The lecturer makes the lamest jokes and American boy (who sat in front of me) had a really bright screen on his laptop and spent the lecture watching awesome bmx videos which were way more interesting than the lecture very distracting. Introduction to Fashion (which I had today) was definitely my favourite so far. It was incredibly interesting, funny and a lot more informational than the majority of first week lectures. The computer lab session was really good too since we went over the first assessment, looked at fashion blogs/sites and spent time on facebook.

The weather has been awful lately. It’s either been unbearably hot or dreary and wet (which has done nothing for my damaged-beyond-repair-but-my-mother-won’t-chop-it-off-like-I’ve-asked-her-to hair). I’m pretty sure I spent most of today without my shoes on because they soaked through. The train is really cold and so are the lecture rooms, regardless of the weather.

I’ve been buying and reading a lot of books lately (I even went to the on-campus bookstore which was great) so I’ll compile a list of book I’ve bought this month/last month, like I promised, soon. This weekend I also promised myself that I’d rearrange my wardrobe (i.e.: move all the coats to the top shelf so I have enough room for the rest of my clothes) and clean/vacuum my room because it’s slowly becoming a hovel which always seems like a good idea until I actually attempt it.

Tonight (and every Friday night) happens to be TV-watching night for my sister and I where we catch up on Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars together (even though I watch Gossip Girl without her on a Tuesday). It’s kinda become our tradition which is fun. I suppose I don’t really have anything else to say for now so I hope at least one person bothers to read this. I still love all of you(r faces).

This, my tumblr followers, is the cramped disaster that is my wardrobe. This isn’t all my clothes (obviously) since I have a whole bunch that need to washed/repaired and all of my hoodies/shorts/jeans are folded on the shelves. I rearranged it by colour this morning (well, sort of) and I don’t have a light in my walk-in robe so the colours are a little off.
